Presiden TNBJOU kini Naib Presiden (Sektor Swasta) MTUC
Khalid ousts Syed Shahir for MTUC presidency
December 29, 2010
PETALING JAYA, Dec 29 – Khalid Atan’s politically-neutral team swept aside several incumbents tonight including president Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud for three top posts in the national union centre, Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC).
Khalid, who was deputy president, beat the Kelana Jaya PKR chief who was trying for his third term as president after toppling Datuk Zainal Rampak in 2004.
Khalid received 255 votes against Syed Shahir who took 213 votes in a victory that is seen to benefit the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government.
The MTUC is seen as a key organisation for votes between BN and the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) which is led by PKR’s de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Khalid’s team mate Halim Mansor took the powerful secretary-general’s post by defeating Kuala Langat MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid and J. Solomon.
Halim took 188 votes, Solomon 117 while Sani received 165 votes.
Khalid’s team also took the deputy presidency with Mohd Jafar Abd Majid defeating P. Maniyam and Abdul Razak Md Hassan.
Jafar won 170 votes against Maniyam’s 157 undi and Razak’s 140 votes.
A total of 479 delegates out of 552 cast their votes in the triennial elections.
But the MTUC 2010-2013 leadership is seen as a mixed bag as several of Syed Shahir’s faction also won posts.
The deputy secretary-general’s post was won by Samuel Devadasan, who won with 291 undi against R Jey Kumar who is with Khalid’s team.
Awang Ibrahim from Team Syed Shahir won the financial secretary’s post with 240 votes to beat Abdullah Abu Bakar who received 225 votes.
The deputy financial secretary went to Jimmy Tong from Team Khalid with 259 votes against Md Helmee Abu who won 205 votes.
The winning vice-presidents are A Balasubramaniam, Robert Vijendran, Mohd Roszeli Majid, W. M. Naim Shukri Mohamad and Mohd Khir Mansor for the private sector with Kang Bee Leng, Rosilah Hashim and Hashim Adnan (public sector) and Zainal Ismail, Ahmad Helmi Ibrahim and S Subramaniam (statutory bodies).
